2011 Front Yard Garden Competition:
South Buffalo’s Newman Place To Get a Green Makeover

After the excitement of the 2010 Front Yard Garden Competition in which North Parade Avenue was dramatically transformed by members of the Western New York Nursery & Landscape Association, the event returned in 2011 with the goal of rejuvenating Newman Place in South Buffalo.

Modeled after the London, England garden makeover contest, the 2011 National Garden Festival event will included 13 front yards facing the Frederick Law Olmsted-designed Cazenovia Park and feature the talents of Western New York’s best landscape professionals. Nearly 700 votes were received. The lucky winners are:

People’s Choice Award, Online Voting:

• 1st Place: 87 Newman Place (Murray Brothers Nurseries)
• 2nd Place: 67 Newman Place (Beyond the Basics Property Services)

People’s Choice Award, In Person Voting:

• 1st Place: 53 Newman Place (The English Gardener)
• 2nd Place: 87 Newman Place (Murray Brothers Nurseries)

In addition to the public voting, a team of gardening experts reviewed the gardens and bestowed several technical and special awards:

Frederick Law Olmsted Award for Design Excellence:

Buffalo & Erie County Botanical Gardens Award for Garden Design:

• 87 Newman Place (Murray Brothers Nursery)

Buffalo & Erie County Botanical Gardens Award for Plant Selection:

• 83 Newman Place (T. O'Donnell Landscaping)

Buffalo Green Fund/Buffalo in Bloom Award:

• Elbers Landscape Service, Inc., 80 N. Parade Ave.

Buffalo in Bloom Low Maintenance Award:

The Front Yard Garden Competition is part of larger initiative on the part of the Buffalo Olmsted Parks Conservancy to beautify a neighborhood in South Buffalo and is intended to leave a lasting imprint on this block of homes.
