Green, smart and not bad looking either. Join us for a guided tour of seven spots where community has worked with Mother Nature, not against her, marking the new green approach in Buffalo’s
neighborhoods. Along the way we’ll provide history and background on each of the sites, and at each spot we’ll have a project organizer join us to answer your questions. And you will have questions! We begin on the West Side where we’ll visit M.A.P.’s tilapia farm and compost operation. Across the street we’ll take a look at PUSH’s new environmentally conscious park and playground. Then back onto the
bus and over a few blocks to five adjacent lots that once held abandoned houses that were leveled by P.U.S.H. and which are now sporting
gardens for 28 neighborhood families, many of them immigrants. Out along Furhmann Boulevard we’ll see what’s being called the Outer Harbor Parcel where you’ll see wind sculptures, a natural playground and more. Then on to South Buffalo where we’ll stop briefly at Riverfest Park on Ohio St., before having lunch at the Mutual Riverfront Park on Hamburg Street with its wonderful view of the world famous grain elevators. On Buffalo’s East Side we’ll visit a 3 acre parcel of the Buffalo Central Terminal site that’s been reclaimed as an urban habitat. We’ll help you understand that when you’re looking at sunflowers, you’re seeing phyto-remediation at work. And then on to the gardens built on the roof of the Broadway Market parking garage where we’ll explain how the gardens also
represent community building in that struggling neighborhood. You’ll have time to go into the Market to enjoy the more than 25 vendors in this 125th anniversary year. Finally, back at the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus parking lot, we’ll explain how that relatively narrow strip of vegetation at the end of the 4 acre parking lot can divert 4
million gallons of storm water annually from Buffalo’s sewer system.
